The Menstrual Salon:
A Slow-Reading Collective,
Silverlake, LA
What if the menstrual cycle wasn’t something to hide, fix, or optimize, but something to get curious about?
The Menstrual Salon is a monthly gathering for slow reading and open conversation about the many stories surrounding menstruation. Together we explore books, essays, and ideas that look at the cycle from different angles: biology, history, culture, politics, medicine, and everyday life. Meetings are held in-person in Silverlake, LA.
This isn’t a class and there are no experts in the room. Instead, it’s a space for collective curiosity, where literature becomes a starting point for reflection, discussion, and shared discovery.
Some months, we dive into menstrual literacy through The Fifth Vital Sign. Other months, we explore the strange and fascinating history of medicine through Unwell Women, question menstrual politics with If Men Could Menstruate, or reflect on wellness culture through Period Power.
We read slowly.
We ask questions.
We follow ideas wherever they lead.
Some conversations will be practical, some surprising, and some deeply personal. All are welcome.
The Salon is simply a place to gather once a month, open a book, and explore how something as ordinary—and extraordinary—as the menstrual cycle shapes our bodies, our knowledge, and our world.
